CS2GEOGUESSR is a free Counter-Strike fan project. This page explains what the site remembers about your games, what other players can see, and how browser storage and Steam sign-in work.
1. About the site
CS2GEOGUESSR is a personal, independently run fan project. When this policy says "we" or "us", it means the person maintaining the site and deciding how player information is used.
2. What information is saved?
Guest profiles. You do not need a Steam account or email address to play. The site creates a random player ID and saves your chosen nickname, character, and game history on the server. Your browser also remembers settings, recent results, and some progress.
Steam sign-in. If you sign in, we save your SteamID to connect your games to your account. Steam can also provide your public display name and avatar. We never receive your Steam password or Steam Guard code. Your guest history may be linked to your Steam account when you sign in.
Game results. Saved results include the game played, scores, round scores, start and finish times, and whether a run qualifies for the leaderboard. These records power your history, personal bests, and rankings.
Connection details. Servers receive information such as your IP address, requested page, and browser details when delivering the site. Short-lived request information is also used to limit spam, repeated login attempts, and other abuse.
3. Why is this information used?
We use player information to:
- remember your settings and progress;
- connect your games to the right guest or Steam account;
- show your history, personal bests, and public leaderboard results;
- keep sessions working and prevent abuse;
- investigate errors and incorrect scores.
Where EU or UK data-protection law applies, the grounds for processing are providing the account and game features you request, legitimate interests in keeping the site secure and rankings fair, and complying with legal obligations where necessary. Legitimate interests do not override your data-protection rights.
4. Browser storage and sessions
We use cookies and browser storage to remember your nickname, character, sound settings, and recent progress, and to keep you signed in.
You can clear this information in your browser settings at any time. This resets what is saved on your device and may sign you out. It does not remove your saved online profile or scores. Temporary data is handled separately: expired sessions and old unfinished games are cleared automatically.
Guest cookies last up to 180 days and are renewed when you return. Steam sign-in lasts up to 30 days, unless you sign out sooner. The temporary cookie used during sign-in expires after 10 minutes.
Settings and recent results stored in your browser stay until you clear them, the game replaces older entries, or your browser removes them. Blocking essential cookies may stop sign-in and saved profiles from working.
5. What can other players see?
Public leaderboards show eligible results from Steam-linked accounts. Entries include your chosen nickname, character, score, position, and related game stats. Your name and character can also appear to other players in a room.
Guest results are saved in your profile but are not currently included on the public leaderboards. Avoid putting private information in your nickname. Removing something from the site cannot remove copies or screenshots made by other people.
6. Steam and services that deliver the site
Steam handles authentication on its own website, under its own privacy policy. We use the SteamID it returns to identify your linked account. Signing in to CS2GEOGUESSR does not give us access to your Steam password or permission to trade your items.
Hosting, file storage, and image delivery services process connection information needed to deliver pages and game media. Some images and avatars may load from external hosts, which receive the connection details needed to send those files. Where processing happens depends on the services used to deliver the site; it may be outside your country.
We do not sell players' personal data. Information may also be disclosed where legally required or necessary to investigate abuse or protect legal rights.
7. Analytics and advertising
The current site does not include advertising trackers or third-party analytics scripts. Its browser storage supports games, preferences, and account sessions.
If optional tracking is added, this policy will be updated and consent will be requested where required before that tracking is enabled.
8. How long is information kept?
Temporary data is cleaned up regularly. Expired guest sessions are removed automatically, and unfinished game records are cleared once they are more than seven days old.
Saved profiles, completed games, and personal bests are kept so you can return to your progress. These remain until removed, including when a player is inactive. Weekly leaderboards refresh which results count towards that week's ranking; they do not reset your account or erase your game history.
9. Your choices and rights
You can edit your nickname and character from your profile, sign out of Steam, and clear locally stored data in your browser settings.
Depending on the law that applies to you, you may have the right to:
- access your personal data and receive a copy;
- correct inaccurate information;
- request deletion of your account, scores, or other personal data;
- restrict or object to certain uses of your information;
- receive portable data where that right applies;
- complain to your local data-protection authority.
Account ownership may need to be verified before personal data is shared or changed. Requests are subject to the time limits and exceptions required by applicable law.
10. Children and privacy
CS2GEOGUESSR is not designed for children under 13. Account registration and public leaderboards are intended for players aged 16 or older. Younger players should use guest features only with parent or guardian permission and where permitted by law.
If we learn that a child's personal information was collected without permission required by law, we will take steps to remove it.
11. Keeping information secure
Account sessions use private session tokens. Access checks limit which saved profile and game history a session can retrieve. No website can guarantee complete security, so keep your Steam account secure and avoid sharing private information in public names or game content.
12. Changes to this policy
This page will be updated when the site's data practices change. The date at the top shows the latest revision. Additional notice will be provided where required.
